There's Modness to ar Methods!!  TS-950sdx Receiver Mods  There's Modness to ar Methods!!


Gotta Hear dat VOOODOOOO!!!

OK ... You got your long awaited TS-950sdx,
took it out of the box and set it up.
You plugged in an antenna and your nice set of Hi-Fi headphones,
and with great expectations turned on the transceiver.

What's this??
Auuuug....it sounds awful!
Absolutely no Fidelity.
This is what We found on the Stock TS-950sdx:

Stock SSB

Main Receiver:

Headphone/Ext Speaker Jacks
The Frequency Response of SSB on the Main Receiver is
just horrid thru the Headphone/External Speaker Jacks.
The Lows start rolling of at around 200cps and the Highs around 1.5Kc.
The average -3db bandwidth is from around 100cps to 3Kc.
The average -20db bandwidth is from around 28cps to 5.5Kc.

Acc2 Jack
It's a little better thru the Acc2 Jack on the rear of the rig due
to the Audio not having to go thru extra frequency restricting circuitry.
The Lows start rolling of at around 200cps and the Highs around 2.8Kc.
The average -3db bandwidth is from around 80cps to 4Kc.
The average -20db bandwidth is from around 15cps to 6Kc.

Sub Receiver:
Listening to this thing is a Horror! My God, it sounds bad.
The widest filter it has is 2.2Kc.
The Lows start rolling of at around 400cps and the Highs around 2.2Kc.
The average -3db bandwidth is from around 300cps to 2.5Kc.

TX Monitor:
The sound from this thing is just plain Hideous!
Even though the Sub-receiver IF Filters are automatically bypassed in the monitor mode,
the AF circuitry limits the bandwidth horribly.
Unfortunately, We lost the Stock Bandwidth SpectrLab Graphs for the Monitor.



Stock AM


Headphone/Ext Speaker Jacks
The Frequency Response of AM is just as horrid as the Sub Receiver Audio on SSB.
The Lows start rolling of at around 200cps and the Highs around 1.2Kc.
The average -3db bandwidth is from around 150cps to 2Kc.
The average -20db bandwidth is from around 40cps to 4.5Kc.

Acc2 Jack
Again, it's a little better thru this Jack due to the Audio not having to go thru extra frequency restricting circuitry.
The Lows start rolling of at around 200cps and the Highs around 1.5Kc.
The average -3db bandwidth is from around 120cps to 2.5Kc.
The average -20db bandwidth is from around 28cps to 6Kc.

Well, needless to say that was a little disappointing.
But, this rig was designed with contesting in mind.
The selectivity is great, and combined with the narrow
Frequency Response of the audio, it makes a formidable contesting rig.
Unfortunately, That is not what we were looking for.
It is totally unacceptable to our needs.

NOTE: All 3 of the "UNIT" Mods must be completed in order to get the Flat Receiver Bandwidth.

  Receiver Mod Comparison Graphs Here are some SpectraLab Graphs showing the comparative difference in Frequency Response from before and after the Receiver Mods.
  AF Unit (X49-3050-00) Mod The mods here are for the AF unit. There are allot of electrolytic and chip capacitors that need to be changed on this board. These mods are for the Main and Sub Receiver Audio Frequency Pre-Amp circuits. There are also a few chip caps changed for the monitor circuit.
  Control Unit (X53-3380-00) Mod These mods are for the Control Unit. There are some Tantalums (YUK...SPIT!!) on this board that need changing. Also some chip caps and electrolytics. These mods are for the Main and Sub-Receiver Audio Frequency Main Amplifier circuits.
  IF Unit (X48-3100-00) Mod The mods here are for the IF Unit. There are 2 chip caps that need to be changed out to increase the Audio Bandwidth for the Sub-Receiver/Monitor.
